My Mother

My mother was born on 24th December, 1910 A.D. She was the only child of her parents namely Sri Srish Chandra Chakrabarty and Sreemati Hiran Bala Devi. Before her marriage, my mother, studied in English medium school. She was good in her studies. My mother's paternal home was in Village : Shologhar, Bikrampur subdivision, District Dhaka of Undivided India. Presently this place is in Bangladesh.

My mother was good in music, particularly in kirtan (a typical holy song of Bengal, based on the life of Lord Shri Krishna and His consort Srimati Radha).
As told to me by my Mother, I was born when she was 31 years of age.

She used to attend the family gatherings with other office colleagues of my father. At that time my father had quite a good number of English friends and we used to celebrate Christmas, Easters and other English festivals also along with our Hindu festivals. Saraswati Puja and Lakshmi Puja used to be held in our house every year.

My mother was running a hosiery business also for some years in Calcutta. I used to go with my mother in different places in connection with her business when I was just a boy of six years of age.On all such occasions my mother and me used to take a glass of orange-juice or coco cola while returning, from the shop opposite the Kolkata High Court.

My mother often used to bring me from my school (Hare School) after its closing hours. At that time we were staying in 12/1/1 Shatrughna Ghosh Lane, Kolkata - 700012. It used to take about fifteen minutes time on foot to reach my school from our house of Shatrughna Ghosh Lane. She used to ask me lot of questions about the studies in the school while returning with her.

When my grandmother (mother's mother) died in 1954, my mother who was her only child, used to chant the slokas of Shri Madbhagavat Gita everyday probably to overcome the mental grief. Often I used to hear the discussion between my father and mother on Shri Madbhagavat Gita at that time.

My mother left her mortal body on 15.3.1997. I had a close association with my mother. I used to enjoy the philosophical discussions with my mother. I have written a poem on "My Mother" and got it published in my Book of poems titled as "That Inn on the Hill Side Road". An introduction of the same is available in my poetry website
